As previously mentioned, one of the most challenging things in life can be to live fully without conflict. Can we be successful in the world, fully being ourselves, and also stop our struggling? Here is a brief story of the moment I integrated this understanding into my life with the support of a mystic.
When I hosted a live television interview show, one of my guests was the enlightened Sufi master Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. He looked impressive - an older man with flowing white hair, white beard, bushy black eyebrows, and flowing white robes. His resume was extensive - educated at the Sorbonne, co-founded the Omega Institute, and head of the Sufi Order of the West (now known as Sufi International) - and his presence was even more remarkable. Three years earlier I had read the book "The Last Barrier" by Sufi mystic Reshad Feild, then prayed hard to meet an enlightened Sufi master. Meeting Pir Vilayat was the answer to that longing, and I realized it when I first met him in the Green Room at the television studio in Atlanta.
Sitting close to him on stage I started feeling a bit spacey in a way I had never felt before. I had to stay very focused because I was conducting a live tv interview, yet what I really wanted to do was be quiet and close my eyes because it felt so blissful. It is hard to describe but at the time I said it felt like I was dying and being born at the same time. From reading about meeting a mystic in person, I was under the impression not to waste time with intellectual questions, but rather ask personal and potentially experiential questions, including asking something to help the viewers. So I asked him "I understand how to live in the world, and how to be on a spiritual path, but I don't understand how I can do both?"
He said "Most people live their lives trying to prove their self worth through their husband, wife, kids, car, home, job, money.- everything outside of themselves. If you can realize you are intrinsically okay just as you are, then everything becomes spiritual."
It hit me like a spiritual zen tap which energetically exploded in me like a bolt of lightning. His answer permanently transformed my life, as I didn't just hear him intellectually, but felt a real integration internally. Until that moment, I had been making separations, distinctions as to what was spiritual and what wasn't. Suddenly I realized if I chose to be self-accepting then everything was spiritual. Everything could be used as a doorway, an opportunity, a support.
"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step" ~ Lao Tzu
At some point on our spiritual journey, we tire of toggling back and forth between pain and pleasure. That's when our conscious response and what we choose to embody, becomes more important in transforming ourselves. We don't need to physically die but it takes a willingness to die to the past, embrace change, and stop procrastinating from fully being ourselves (many of us wait till we are older or dying), for us to live fully in the present moment. Taking the first step in anything is the scariest and most difficult thing to do, especially if we are wanting to transform our lives. Many of us will still want to stubbornly cling to the status quo even if it's not working (in business, relationships or our spiritual path), rather than risk making a change that we know will be helpful. When we no longer feel satisfied with what we are manifesting, when not listening to ourselves, remaining in our past, and being externally-validating becomes too powerful to ignore, we will look for answers and seek support.
Conflict is held in the etheric body until released. If it is held long enough energetically, it affects the physical body as stress, disease then death. The various forms of conflict which can unconsciously sabotage our lives and steer it's course, like the submerged part of an iceberg, include any residual conflict from past lives, genetic (conflict passed down to us, like transgenerational trauma), epigenetic (stress which causes genetic tendencies to crop up, like if we have ancestors who had cancer, then we can get cancer if stressed enough), plus any unresolved trauma and relational conflict from this life. Conflict can stem from our family, peers, school, media, religion, government - anything that we give our power to instead of feeling powerful as ourselves. We also tend to share conflict with groups that we belong to (i.e.religious, political, corporate) if they hold conflict as well.
From 0-7 years old, instead of simply being ourselves, we typically experience some type of relationship or trauma wounding, and then instead of healing it, we start forming success and survival strategies as a compensation to get what we want. If we are not conscious enough to dive into ourselves, then our lives are subconsciously hijacked by our unresolved trauma, limiting beliefs and judgements. Our conflict skews our perspective on reality - like trying to look through a stained-glass window - and until we release our conflict, we will attract situations to help us complete it, instead of manifesting our heart’s desire. Our conflicted thoughts and emotions also act like static - preventing us from seeing clearly and acting like a barrier from being in the present moment - impeding us from shifting into higher states of consciousness. Like being in a crowded room with hundreds of voices, it’s almost impossible to hear ourselves or our guides with all the internal noise happening. So what happens if we start resolving our past conflict and learning how to respond by embracing the present moment?
"Embracing every day as my last, every moment becomes my first"
~ Chris Liaguno
The Importance of Response vs Reaction
A reaction is a past or future-oriented partial expression, based on fear or doubt, where the intention is to control the outcome. We know if we are reacting to life if we keep repeating it (i.e. we quit our job because we hate our boss only to have the next boss act just like our old one, we get out of one relationship because we are triggered by our spouse only to keep facing the same trigger with others). A response is a present-oriented full expression, based on curiosity and willingness, where the intention equals the outcome. Once we learn when we are reacting, and how to shift from a reaction into a response, we are not only encouraged to live in the peacefulness and power of the present moment, but we realize that we can face everything in life when we are willing to give ourselves what we need in the moment.
Completing with our past gives us more energy and consciousness. All the energy that was formerly entangled in our conflict can now be used for creativity, manifesting, relationships, business, new abilities, personal development, spiritual growth - whatever we want. We find ourselves more in the present moment where everything is possible. The dance of presence and trust can take time depending on each person's particular background and situation. As we develop this rapport, life feels more like a blessing, and it then becomes easier to create a vision for our future and embody who we want to be now. If we are too conflicted, then creating a vision or believing that it's even possible may feel daunting or out of reach.
Having a vision of our future doesn't mean we need to live in the future and step outside the present moment. It does mean that we need to realize that we are typically living life from the outside-in, instead of from our core. We tend to focus on doing or having to then give ourselves permission to feel what we want - success, love, etc. We can be locked into creating a duality, an internal division ("us vs them"), instead of leading with curiosity, witnessing and gratitude. Desire and suffering continue when we separate our thoughts, feelings, words and actions. When we integrate these and embody how we want to be in our core (i.e. what we want to feel when we have what we want) then like a tree, everything else becomes a direct outgrowth of that inner reality. When we realize how ridiculous it is that we are procrastinating from fully being ourselves, we can more easily shift into being internally-validating. Once we become more present and are manifesting our vision, we start realizing there are more states of consciousness possible - then life shifts from personal development into spiritual growth.
"You are not a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop." ~ Rumi
When we embrace the personal development of knowing ourselves and healing, being present, and manifesting in our spiritual journey, then we come into an even more profound spiritual growth phase. Once we start releasing internal conflict and embracing the present moment, we start experiencing more "stream of consciousness" moments. These are moments where we allow ourselves to release the subconscious judgments and control which can typically dominate our conscious reality, in favor of accepting the flow of the moment. We will have moments of feeling more integrated, peaceful and balanced, which can extend into longer periods of time.
After we are more comfortable with accepting the "stream of consciousness" as our dominant reality, we reach a state of self-realization. This is where we have released a portion of our internal conflict and feel a consistent flow of bliss which can feel overwhelming at first. This is the pre-cursor to enlightenment. The moments of joy now feel like a continuous stream. We can still have some judgments, but we are we not taking things as personally as before, and we can find ourselves with more abilities. This may sound strange but we can shift in and out of self-realization - it is not a static state. It is helpful to have an internal consistency to move into enlightenment. This means anything which keeps us in conflict can pop us out, and everything that keeps us internally validating in the moment keeps us in the stream and helps move us towards enlightenment. Sometimes an integration period might be desired before the next state of enlightenment, and for some people they experience both self-realization and enlightenment at the same time.
Enlightenment is a static state, meaning that unlike self-realization where you can pop in and out, we would have to willfully reverse being enlightened. This is a state where we have conscious access to Universal Consciousness or God/Creator/Source through our soul. Enlightenment is not a goal that we achieve but rather it is more of a sudden realization, a remembering, an uncovering and acceptance of ourselves. Any of us could be enlightened in any moment, which means that all the therapeutic, meditative and spiritual techniques are simply designed to get us out of our own way and to fully accept ourselves in the present moment.
We may choose to work on specific issues and simply stop once those are complete - not taking the Deeper Dive. And it is entirely possible to go through our entire journey with only our own self guidance. Yet we can lessen our struggle and suffering by inviting some guidance and support.
At times when change is needed, we can benefit from the appropriate form of guidance. Just like it helps to have guidance through puberty when we are going through so many changes, or the wisdom of a social worker when we have fallen below social consciousness, it can help tremendously to have encouragement, inspiration, support, and acceptance for our healing and spiritual journey, especially if we want to move beyond social consciousness. To the casual observer, someone who has fallen below social consciousness and someone who needs to move beyond it can appear the same from the outside - but they are not. Enlightened Response Coaching offers support for those starting their journey, those who may need help in a particular aspect of life, relationships or career, and it uniquely addresses the needs of those who have outgrown "playing the game" of life (many of whom have been very successful), have tired of the vision that was handed to them by others, and feel a longing to express something more.

Enlightened Response Coaching uses techniques from a synthesis of modalities such as coaching, body-centered psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, EMDR, meditation and awareness techniques to help us start and continue our journey when we feel resistance. The experience of becoming adept at giving ourselves what we need in the moment can resemble learning how to dance - the process can feel a bit clumsy and unfamiliar at first, but then as we get used to discovering ourselves, we feel inspired and find our natural rhythm with life. Trusting ourselves and becoming present become synchronous - we deeply trust ourselves as we become more present, and we become more present as we trust ourselves more.
First we will have an interview so that we can see where you have come from, what you want and how we can start approaching it. Next we will develop a vision of what you want. Then we will have regular coaching sessions with homework to help you shift. At some point depending on your goals, as you progress in responding and becoming more present, you will need less guidance from me as you fully integrate your wisdom into your daily life. The length of time this takes will depend on your goals, your willingness to change, and your willingness to give yourself what you want.
With years of experience of working internationally with clients and students, including working within a healing and practical mystery school, I will develop personalized programs that cater to your unique needs. For most of us we can be so normalized to our own conflict, our own patterns, that dysfunction can seem to be regular life. If we are an adult and our wounding and subsequent character strategies to compensate happened when we were very young, we might not even be aware that we are not fully being ourselves, and that we want a change, until some drama or trauma makes us feel uncomfortable enough. In fact, we might even be drawn to or even create drama/trauma so that we can change.
Learning how to respond requires us to be in the present moment, to listen to ourselves, to not override ourselves, to give ourselves what we need. It stops the pain, suffering and struggling of reaction.
There is no judgment about whatever you want to work on. The duration of an Enlightened Response coaching program depends on the individual and their goals. Completing with specific issues may take as little as a few months, while moving beyond social consciousness can take longer.
When we want to take the deeper dive because we feel that more is possible, then we first need to know that it's possible to shift from struggle and suffering to a more effortless, joyful flow of life by example or role model. For me this happened through reading about other mystics and their experiences (i.e. Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, Meetings with Remarkable Men by G Gurdjieff, and Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East by Baird Spalding) and from actually meeting mystics to see for myself what was possible. One mystic who was a mentor told the story of when he went to the Himalayas as a young man and climbed up for days to find a teacher who lived in a cave. He was told to wait outside which he did for several days, not knowing what would happen. Finally the teacher came out from the cave and said "Why are you here?', to which he replied "I didn't really know until just now, but I needed to see what was possible for me outside of myself".
Once we know that releasing conflict and shifting consciousness is not only possible, but a natural part of the human experience, then we can feel inspired and encouraged to discover how it can happen for ourselves. As part of our journey, we can also spend years and even lifetimes searching for proof that something exists beyond what is accepted as "regular" life. We can have a variety of experiences like astral projection (a few experiences are shared throughout the website, including in the About section) which can permanently shift our understanding, but the important part is to be inspired and not distracted. Receiving an Akashic Records or Spirit consultation can help satisfy this longing and hopefully encourages us to discover ourselves even more and not just fixate on gathering more amazing experiences or escaping our lives.
Even after we have found more wisdom and confirmation, we can take more time talking ourselves into shifting beyond social consciousness into higher states. At some point we realize that shifting consciousness is not some remote hope or fantasy which isn't grounded in reality, but an accepted part of our natural human existence.
Our spirit will keep incarnating until at least reaching the stage of enlightenment. Enlightenment is a mid-level state of consciousness, as there are other stages of consciousness beyond enlightenment, such as illumination and ascension. Our spirit, like a child wanting to become an adult, takes the lead in every lifetime as it tries to give greater responses and shift into the higher states of consciousness. Our soul, which initially takes a backseat mentor position in each lifetime, places immutable events into each lifetime to help our spirit respond and awaken.
The next state of illumination is where our spirit and soul act more like a unified energetic entity. This allows our spirit to fully know what it can be as a soul, including more fully demonstrating wisdom and abilities from the soul. At this stage we begin to have the ability to manipulate time and space.
Ascension is when our spirit, having reached a certain fullness of the human experience, chooses to complete its evolution by becoming a soul. Then that spirit will partner with a soul which wants to help it achieve that and keep incarnating together until the ascension happens. Although Jesus and Mary are the most commonly known historical figures to have ascended, ascension has happened throughout time in cultures around the world. The Dalai Lama is a public example of someone currently focused on ascension. Just as there are enlightened people privately helping out, there are more ascended masters that are quietly and effectively helping behind the scenes.
